A bet on energy
I think a lot about how much clean and abundant energy our future is going to need. A lot of the things we want to build -- new cities, faster travel, clean water for everyone, reaching AGI, becoming multiplanetary, etc. -- are tied to our ability to produce far more energy than we do today, and with much greater efficiency.
Almost every big leap in civilization came from finding a way to get more energy at lower cost. Farming led to a food surplus. Coal and the steam engine gave us factories and railways. Oil and electricity led to fast cars, planes, computers, and now AI.
And each time we used more energy than anyone expected. This is to say that there are very few things that are impossible to build if you have enough energy.
But despite how important energy is to the world, I don't think enough people are working on it. Part of the reason is probably that energy tech and infrastructure are hard, and it takes a lot of time to build.
But I also think that too much capital and talent go toward things that don't matter nearly as much as energy (making consumption easier, making leisure more engaging, making new forms of content and entertainment, building more AI assistants, etc).
There are many historical examples of what concentrated talent and capital can do to hard physical problems. The Apollo program is a great example.
Helping the right founders get more capital and smart people around them seems like a good way to make progress happen faster.
It is hard to think of many things more fundamental to bet on than energy.
